This series I can safely put in my top five most under rated fantasy series available for purchase today. Whether you are a reader who loves: worldbuilding, characters, or magic systems the Moontide Quartet is the series for you! Being in the mild of a Malazan Book of the Fallen reread, Steven Erikson fans will find plenty to enjoy in this world. The magic in this world continues to build upon the already deeply thought and well constructed system brought to us in Mage’s Blood. You will not be able to guess half the shocking moments that David Hair has up his sleeve in this triumph of a doorstopper. The pacing was excellent and it just kept me coming back to the story time and time again into the late hours of the morning. To say that Scarlet Tides was a nonstop page turn would be the understatement of the century.

This will be a spoiler free review, but I will be touching on certain events in book 1. The epic scope and world-building of this series I consider to be in the top echelon of fantasy authors writing today.

David Hair sure knows how to right a sequel that builds in everyway on the success of Mage’s Blood. The Rondian legions are crossing into Antiopia with reckless abandonment hunting for goods, riches, and blood. Yes, my list does not include GRRM, Tolkien, Joe Abercrombie, and Steven Erikson. The Moontide has begun and the Leviathan Bridge has been raised from the depths of the sea. Brett (The Warded Man is top ten worthy The Desert Spear and The Daylight War knocked it out of the top ten) The Acts of Caine by Matthew Woodring Stover The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss The Tales of the Ketty Jay by Chris Wooding (this one isn't so epic, but it's a lot of fun)Ĭhronicles of the Unhewn Thrown by Brian Staveley Honorable mentions (because there are so many I wish I could list here). The Raven's Shadow trilogy by Anthony Ryan (contrary to most people, I actually liked the second book) The Stormlord trilogy by Glenda Larke (this one tends to get weaker reviews, but I loved it)ġ0. The Eli Monpress series by Rachel Aaronħ. The Powder Mage trilogy by Brian McClellanĦ. To be honest, I actually liked this even more than I like the Dresden Files.)Ĥ. The Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher (I couldn't put Dresden according to my rules, so I had to give Butcher some love. Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson (yeah, I like Sanderson a bit)ģ.

The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson (because I trust Sanderson to keep the high quality throughout)Ģ. Basically, these are the kinds of stories I'd like to tell.ġ. So no Dresden Files or Harry Potter, though I'd definitely put them in my list of all-time favorite series.įor the most part, I picked the series that have most influenced my own writing. For this, I'm going to include only adult epic fantasy (as that seems to be what others are doing).
